Tomorrow evening, the 13th of July is the opening of the Winter Wonderland exhibition. Although we are unable to attend, we strongly urge you to don something cozy and head down to gallery Salon91 on Kloof street in Gardens, Cape Town. You can sip on wine while you admire (and possibly take home) all the delicious wintery delights on exhibit.

The show opens at 19.30h, so diarise now! Happy Winter day!

Our Artworks have arrived in Cape Town, all in readyness for Winter WonderLand at Salon 91.

MissYucki has been hard at work for the last little while on 5 works for Salon 91, a gallery in Cape Town. We have exhibited at the gallery before and the experience was great! This time we are participating in a group show entitled Winter Wonderland along with some of our favourite SA artists like Bison and Jade Klara, we think the show is going to be phenomenal.

MissYucki has been invited to show a print at a group exhibition at The Cape Town International Tattoo Convention, curated by SixLove Events and Wildfire Tattoos the show focuses on tattooing, of course, and the theme of the “Dead man’s hand”.

Manuela Gray explains that, “The hand is a powerful symbol that transcends time, culture and religion. It can be a symbol of strength, solidarity, supplication, virtue and power. The inspiration behind this exhibition is the superstition of the ‘Dead Man’s Hand’, also known as ‘Hand of Glory’ (the hand, cut from the body of a hanged man, was used as a charm and was thought to have the power to open locked doors and hypnotize.)”

Sounds like quite an interesting show, so if you are in Cape Town, enjoy art and tattoos, why not visit the exhibition and see how MissYucki mixes and trixes up some powerful muti, who knows, perhaps there is a Dead man’s hand brewing in her potjie?

Opening of ‘Dead Man’s Hand’ and ‘Body of Work’ art exhibitions

Following the success of Skulls and Hearts, Dead Man’s Hand is another art event where top South African artists are given a pre-cast hand and given the brief to create a work of art with it. The exhibition will be moved to the Pavilion Conference Centre for the commencement of the convention and on the last day, works will be auctioned off with proceeds going to charity.

Although actually being in South Africa, we were unable to attend the opening of new gallery and shop Entropy. Boo us! However both the MissYucki girls have visited and can vouch for this new little gem. Located in the Bamboo centre at the entrance to Melville in Johannesburg, Entropy nestles on the top floor and commands attention, and, we think, deservedly so. The gallery and shop are curated by Marlene Jennings and Damon Garstang and they have an eye for unusual, clever and quirky South African art and design. The shop is beautifully presented, and we do suggest you pop in to have a look and drool over all the lovely curiosities found within it’s clever corners. You won’t be disappointed.

We were lucky enough to be invited to show our works as part of their opening, and you can still find some of our prints and MissYucki pageant power rosettes adorning their walls. So if you are in Johannesburg, South Africa, take yourself over there now, and have a look. Besides MissYucki artworks you can find beautiful felt creations by Ronel Jordaan, sculptures by Frank van Reenan and some suitcase chairs that we think should be gracing the Yucki attic! You can find out more by visiting the Entropy website, or on their facebook.

MissYucki is showing work from “The Messenger” exhibition at Spritz in the Gothic Quarter, just off Via Laietana next to Barcelona’a old wall. If you missed out on seeing the work in Raval you can still see some selected MissYucki pieces at Spritz. The venue is really cute, super orange and they are famous for their cocktail Spritz made of Cava, and other fancy fizzing ingredients.

Behold the delicious Plumed Pageant Princess. She is a fierce flurry of raspberry-yum pinkness with streaks of mystery mischief. She knows spring is in the air, and at the first glint of sunlight, she was out and about! New photos from the adventures of this plumed pageant princess will be posted soon! In the mean time you can view the rest of this initial set here.

Pageant Power Rosettes can now be bought from the MissYucki shop. They are too cute, You can wear them as an accessory, or even present them to your pet dog, kitty, rabbit or weasel for being your best pageant power friend. They would definitely make cute gifts to anyone who loves pageants!

“SPOOKASEM evokes a sense of sugar and spice and all things nice; a whiff of the whimsical; of childhood innocence; of indulgence; of the carnivalesque; of nostalgia, dreams and nightmares; of desire and sinful pleasures, conjuring up fairgrounds, forgotten lands, extinct creatures, imagined monsters and friendly ghosts.“

MissYucki was asked to participate in the exhibition “City Slickers”

The gallery +27 hosts the show, which started on August 13, 2009. The theme of the exhibition, as the title gives away, was “the city”. Works were printed on A3 fine art paper and all prints, ranging from illustrators & designers from all over South Africa, plus a few international illustrators, will be exhibited for a whole month, starting on the 13th. The exhibition will later this year also travel to Durban, where the same works are to be exhibited.

Exciting Stuff! Go have a look if you are in Pretoria or Johannesburg. You are able to buy the prints… wow your very own A3 MissYucki poster, we know you want to. Plus we’re sure there are tonnes of amazing posters up for grabs by the talented artists in SA. We are pretty bummed we can’t make the show, but it was awesome to be invited! Thanks so much to Maaike for including us, and helping us to spread a little Pageant Power! Proceeds from the show will be donated to different charities, so it’s for a good cause too!
